Art Elvis In The News
The Influence Of Elvis Presley’s Music Upon America
Playing an Elvis Presley vinyl on your home record player, you are often instantaneously reminded of the man’s standing. Rock and roll as it is would likely not be here if it were not for him.
Women across the nation were charmed by his good looks, and men strived to emulate his tough personality. Young people may have also started following him in part because he was such a radical departure from popular performers like Bing Crosby, Perry Como, and Frank Sinatra. The youth of the day believed that they were spurning the old ways and defying their elders by embracing his music.
The vast majority of the younger crowd of listeners was entranced by Elvis and his tunes, and there was no going back. Music would forever be transformed after he and peers like Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and Chuck Berry had made their mark. Instruments, although certainly discernible in pop, were of secondary importance to singing; guitar, bass, and drums began making their presence more felt in the overall sound. Elvis and other singers were also experimenting with different vocal pitches and meters than those before them had used. With all the vocal whimsy and instrumental vitality, rock music was incredibly exciting for younger listeners to take in.
Work such as Elvis’ also challenged the status quo in popular music because it was able to incorporate elements of more than only the traditional pop that had worked so well in previous decades. The large cities of the Northeast and the culture of the white Americans within them were closely tied to the old pop and big band styles that had prevailed. Black communities, of course, had given birth to the very different styles of R&B, blues, and gospel, and these majorly influenced the rock sound. The communities that had engendered these genres were in numerous different areas of the country and were both urban and in small hamlets. Country, with its roots in the rural white culture of the South and West, was also utilized by certain rock artists like Elvis. Elvis himself was wholly a Southerner, having been born in Mississippi and experiencing his teenage years in Memphis, which contributed to his being a perfect embodiment of these stylistic leanings. With the large sampling of national sound forms that was heard in Elvis and contemporary musicians’ work, rock could be seen as a truly “American” style.
Even in Elvis’ older years, he had a broad following, mainly comprised of the same people who had grown up with him in the 1950’s; his hold on them was continual. A great number who lived through those eras still have vinyl records of his albums and hits. For one of America’s musical trailblazers, the honors and acclaim will never be enough, and continue through today.
