Business goes local to get ahead
Perth-based teaching aids supplier, Australian Teaching Aids is walking the green line. This educational aids company can give itself a merit award for its environmentally aware and community-orientated business practices.
After 25 years of supplying classrooms across Australia with quality education aids, the new management of Australian Teaching Aids has intensified its commitment to local industry.
The new management has significantly reduced imports, with eighty per cent of its teaching aids now made locally.
ATA does import its range of novelty pencils from the US, where the products have to meet stringent safety and health regulations.
And when it comes to safety, all of ATA's locally manufactured teaching aids are child-safe and meet Australian health requirements.
Jane Fievez, owner of Australian Teaching Aids, says their decision to focus on local design and manufacturing is paying dividends – for the company, the retailers who on-sell their range as well as for the teachers and students who use their educational products."We firmly believe in encouraging local artists and supporting local industry," she added. “We use local artists and authors, and support local businesses such as ParaQuads to handle most of our packaging. As far as possible, we only employ contractors who are environmentally conscious.
Our book range covers a wide variety of topics from Learning about Libraries, Benchmarking, Maths and Tables and Relief for Relief Teachers, and are all written and published localy.
We use Perth's first environmentally certified printer, Scott Print, for all our posters and educational charts, which are all designed by local artists. They use a Process Green system which ensures that every leg of the printing process, from green electricity, recycled paper, petroleum-free inks and recycled waste, is done in an environmentally sustainable manner.
Australian Teaching Aids extends its caring approach to communities that are less fortunate. Redundant stock of teaching materials is sent to desperately needy schools overseas where there are no facilities and the children often don’t even have a proper meal each day.
“Our approach not only benefits local business, but has advantages for the users of our educational aids too,” added Jane. “For example, the language, grammar and graphics used on charts and stickers that are produced overseas are not always appropriate for an Australian context.By keeping the design and writing local, we can ensure that all our teaching aids are grammatically correct and relevant to the Australian classroom.Because we use local designers who incorporate Australiana into their designs such as gum trees and kangaroos, the products have a special relevance to Australian learners.”
If the growing popularity of products from Australian Teaching Aids is a benchmark, there is simply no substitute for traditional teacher resources to add value to the teaching and learning experience.
